Herbs for Cortisol Balance: Adrenal Support for the "Wired But Tired" Feeling
There is a specific kind of exhausted that does not let you sleep. You are running on empty, your body is begging for rest, and yet your mind will not shut off. I know this feeling intimately. At the height of my own illness, I spent years in adrenal fatigue, and the cruelest part was the contradiction: bone tired all day, then wired and staring at the ceiling all night. If you have felt this, you are not imagining it, and you are not alone.
I want to walk you through what is actually happening in the body during this state, and which herbs I formulated into my Adrenal Support tincture to help restore balance.
What Is Happening in the Body
Your adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys and are responsible for producing cortisol, your primary stress hormone. Cortisol operates on a rhythm. It should rise in the morning to wake you up and taper off by evening to let you rest. Chronic stress disrupts this rhythm. Cortisol can stay elevated when it should be dropping, which is what creates that wired, can't-sleep feeling even when you are utterly depleted.
I want to be transparent with you: "adrenal fatigue" is not a formally recognized medical diagnosis in conventional medicine. But the pattern I am describing, chronic stress disrupting a healthy cortisol rhythm, is well documented and very real. In my clinical practice and in my own body, I have seen how herbal support can help restore that rhythm.
The Herbal Profile Behind My Adrenal Support Tincture
I formulated this blend using an Ayurvedic principle of balancing warming (hot) and cooling (cold) herbs. Warming herbs build strength and circulation. Cooling herbs prevent burnout and calm excess heat. Together they create a more stable, long-term energy system rather than a short-term stimulant effect.
Schisandra (Hot) is the anchor of this formula. It is both a digestive and an adaptogen, supporting nutrient absorption while helping the body adapt to stress. I include it first because digestion is the foundation energy is built on.
Licorice Root (Cold) is deeply nourishing to the adrenal system. It supports cortisol balance and helps sustain energy throughout the day.
Ashwagandha (Hot) is a grounding adaptogen I lean on heavily in my formulations. It reduces stress, supports nervous system balance, and improves resilience over time.
Astragalus (Hot) strengthens vitality and supports long-term immune and adrenal function, which matters because a depleted stress response often takes the immune system down with it.
Siberian Ginseng (Hot) enhances stamina and endurance while helping the body adapt to physical and mental stress.
Rhodiola (Cold) supports mental clarity, focus, and fatigue resistance while helping regulate the stress response, which is why I chose it for anyone dealing with brain fog alongside exhaustion.
Rose Hips (Cold) are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, offering gentle nourishment and support for overall recovery.
Maca (Hot) is traditionally used to support energy, endurance, and hormonal balance, rounding out the formula with sustained vitality.
You can find this full blend in my Adrenal Support tincture. I recommend 1 to 2 full droppers daily, taken directly under the tongue or added to water. As with all of my tinctures, if you are new to herbal extracts, I suggest starting with a lower dose, around 5 drops, and building up as your body adjusts.
Pro Tip: Time Your Licorice Root
One thing I learned through my own recovery and my clinical training is that timing matters as much as the herb itself. I recommend drinking a cup of licorice root tea around 1 PM daily. This is roughly when a natural afternoon cortisol dip tends to happen, the slump that sends most people reaching for coffee or sugar. Licorice root's gentle, sustained support at this window can help carry you through the afternoon without overstimulating your system before bed.
Supporting Sleep at Night
Herbs are one piece of the picture. Restoring a healthy cortisol rhythm also means supporting your body's transition into rest each night. Two things I recommend consistently:
Magnesium at night. Most people are deficient in magnesium, largely because modern agricultural soil has been depleted of the mineral over decades of intensive farming. Magnesium plays a direct role in calming the nervous system and preparing the body for sleep. A magnesium supplement in the evening is one of the simplest additions I recommend to anyone struggling with the wired-but-tired pattern.
Trade screens for pages. Screens in the hour before bed keep the mind stimulated and can suppress your body's natural melatonin production. Reading a physical book instead gives your nervous system a genuine off-ramp, signaling to your body that the day is closing rather than continuing to feed it light and stimulation.
A Note From My Own Experience
I do not say any of this from a textbook. I lived the wired-but-tired years, and rebuilding my own resilience through herbs, timing, and small consistent habits is precisely why I formulated Adrenal Support the way I did. Healing this pattern rarely happens overnight, but the body responds remarkably well to consistent, gentle support.
